SUMMARY:Social Justice: Theory and Practice?
DESCRIPTION:BETA is a partner of the Gilles Gaston Granger Center (UMR 7304) - Aix-Marseille University, which will organize the conference “Social Justice: Theory and Practice?”, on September 10 and 11, 2026, in Aix-en-Provence. Organization: Herrade Igersheim, BETA, University of Strasbourg Feriel Kandil, CGGG, Aix-Marseille University Christophe Salvat, CGGG, Aix-Marseille University CALL FOR PAPERS Présentation: Contemporary theories of social justice emerged in the 1970s, in the wake of John Rawls' A Theory of Justice. Often referred to as “post-Rawlsian” or “non-welfarist” theories, they seek above all to define what a just society must equalize among its members—the equalizandum—and to translate these normative principles, derived from moral and political philosophy, into public policy recommendations. They have fueled public debate on equal opportunity, redistribution, universal access to health care and education, and well-being. They have also inspired extensive research across the humanities and social sciences, not only on issues of distribution and redistribution, but also on themes such as relational justice, intergenerational justice, climate and environmental justice, political justice, and so on. The field of social justice thus illustrates the importance of dialogue between disciplines. However, this diversity can give the impression of a fragmented landscape, divided between abstract theoretical work and empirical analyses with more limited scope. But is this opposition so clear-cut? Criticisms vary. Some criticize theories of justice for being out of touch with reality on the ground; others see them as an ideological resource for activist movements. In any case, the tension between description and prescription—between factual judgments and value judgments—remains central when it comes to defining what is just and unjust. These questions have been the subject of debate among philosophers and economists since the 1970s, initiated in particular by Rawls, Sen, Arrow, and Kolm. Today, these debates continue. Economists have long presented their formalized tools as bridges between theory and practice; they now add the methods of experimental economics to these. For their part, theories of justice aim to be less abstract: they rely more on history, statistics and, more broadly, on empirical analyses from the social sciences, as evidenced by theories of recognition or care. Thus, even if they do not directly dictate public policy, contemporary theories of justice offer a common language, normative criteria, and analytical tools that influence debates on equality, rights, and solidarity. But what is their real impact on decisions regarding redistribution, the fight against inequality, poverty, and discrimination? Faced with the crises and challenges of democratic societies, it is useful to critically reexamine the ambition of these theories, namely to link a diagnosis of lived reality to a prescriptive discourse. Is the link between philosophical and economic theories of justice now recognized for its true importance? Are these theories really heard in public debate? Do they These conference aims both to trace the history of these theories, from their emergence to the present day, and to provide a critical assessment of their contributions and limitations. In particular, we will examine their ability to establish a genuine interdisciplinary dialogue between philosophy, economics, and the social sciences. The speakers participating in these conferences will focus in particular on the following topics: Equality of what? Where do we stand? The cross-influence of philosophy and mathematics on theories of social justice The role of experimentation in the development of a theory of justice The articulation of the positive and the normative through the notion of fundamental needs Recognition and redistribution The relationship between equal opportunities and equal outcomes The historical relationship between scholars, experts, and politicians in the development of mechanisms to combat injustice Social justice and equal political influence Social justice and global justice Intergenerational justice Prioritarism and its developments Fiscal justice and redistribution Social justice and vulnerability Proposals for papers, in French, should take the form of a detailed abstract of two to three pages. They must be sent by January 20, 2026, to: igersheim@unistra.fr feriel.kandil@univ-amu.fr christophe.salvat@univ-amu.fr Responses will be given by March 15 at the latest. A special issue of Cahiers d’Économie Politique is planned following the conference (publication scheduled for summer 2027).

SUMMARY:Jean Monnet Summer School 2026 – Europe’s Innovation Nexus: Science, Technology & Industrial Policy
DESCRIPTION:CALL FOR APPLICATIONS In the framework of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at the Research Centre for European Analysis and Policy (LEAP) and Interdisciplinary Thematic Institute MAKErS of the University of Strasbourg, and co-organised with Luiss University and UNU-MERIT, the Summer School on “Europe’s Innovation Nexus: Science, Technology, and Industrial Policy” will take place at Bureau d’Économie Théorique et Appliquée (BETA), University of Strasbourg, from June 29 to July 1, 2026. The European Union is currently facing a number of structural challenges. Economic growth has been sluggish, geopolitical tensions are on the rise, and Europe appears to be losing ground in the global race for innovation, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI). Yet innovation has never been more critical to ensuring sustainable economic growth and rising standards of living. This year’s Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences has further highlighted this dimension by rewarding scholars who have examined the role of innovation in driving long-term growth. The three-day summer school is designed for PhD students in economics, innovation studies and the social sciences more broadly. It will directly engage with the themes highlighted by the Schumpeterian tradition and the Nobel laureate, that are crucial for Europe’s future: how scientific advances, technological change and industrial transformation interplay to shape growth, competitiveness and policy in European contexts. Interested applicants are invited to consult the Call for Applications here and submit their materials by email to leap@luiss.it, attaching all required documents.

SUMMARY:Summer School on Macroeconomic Modelling and Policy – 2026 edition DGSE
DESCRIPTION:The first edition of the Summer School on Macroeconomic Modelling and Policy, organised by BETA in collaboration with the RENEL Chair and the Faculty of Law, Economics, and Management of Nancy, will take place in Nancy from 8 to 12 June 2026. This edition will focus on Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) models – a key tool in contemporary macroeconomic analysis and in the design of monetary, fiscal, and environmental policies. Each day will combine theoretical instruction in the morning and a practical computer workshop in the afternoon, ensuring a balanced progression between conceptual understanding and technical implementation. The week’s program is designed to help participants develop their skills progressively, starting with the basic RBC model and moving on to New Keynesian extensions and advanced estimation approaches. This structure aims to combine theoretical learning, quantitative practice, and applied research, while promoting scientific cooperation between students, young researchers, and faculty members. The last day is devoted to applied research seminars and a round table, with the participation of speakers from central banks, on the uses of DSGE models in economic policy analysis. Applications are open until 30 April 2026, with rolling assessment from 15 March 2026. More information

SUMMARY:Cournot seminar – Svitlana Vyetrenko (J. P. Morgan AI Research/Gutenberg Chair)
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome to the next session of the BETA Cournot seminar organised with the support of the FSEG on Friday 22/05, in the EHUD room, at 2.00 pm: Svitlana Vyetrenko (J. P. Morgan AI Research/Gutenberg Chair) who will present her paper entitled Language Models for Numerical Reasoning in Regulated Industries Abstract: Language models are rapidly transforming workflows in finance and other regulated industries, offering substantial gains in productivity through natural language interfaces and fast processing of unstructured data. However, their adoption in numerical domains remains constrained by fundamental limitations: standard large language models are optimized for next-token text prediction rather than numerical accuracy, and they struggle with hallucinations, latency, privacy, and regulatory requirements such as auditability and explainability. In this talk, we present a framework for adapting language models to numerical reasoning tasks in regulated environments. We discuss several complementary approaches and illustrate our ideas through real-world use cases. Videoconference link: https://visio.numerique.gouv.fr/urh-uzui-jdj Seminar agenda: https://www.beta-economics.fr/en/2025-2026-cournot-seminars/

SUMMARY:Cournot seminar – Scott Scheall (Austin University)
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome to the next session of the BETA Cournot seminar organised with the support of the FSEG on Tuesday 19/05 at 2:00pm: Scott Scheall (Austin University) who will present his paper entitled Liberalism’s Ouroboros: DOGE and the Liberal Transition Problem in Stark Relief Abstract: In my F. A. Hayek and the Epistemology of Politics: The Curious Task of Economics (2020), I argue that Ludwig von Mises’s famous socialist calculation argument and F. A. Hayek’s various extensions of that argument all share the same general logical form. To wit, To deliberately realize goal G, policymakers must possess knowledge K. Policymakers lack knowledge K. Therefore, policymakers cannot deliberately realize goal G. Corollary: If goal G is to be realized despite policymakers’ lack of knowledge K, spontaneous forces must compensate for this lack of knowledge. In the third chapter of the book, I argue that Austrian economists (indeed, more generally, all classical liberals and libertarians who support small, if not minimal, government) have not established that policymakers possess the knowledge required to deliberately liberalize a relatively illiberal society. Defenses of liberalism, in general, and of liberalization policies, in particular, often assume that policymakers possess such knowledge as a matter of course. I argue, however, that there are many reasons to think and, moreover, much evidence that suggests, policymakers do not typically possess this knowledge. Complicating matters further, there is no argument, to my knowledge, that, when policymakers lack some of the knowledge required to deliberately liberalize, a more liberal society is likely to spontaneously emerge from comparatively illiberal circumstances. Those sympathetic to liberalization policies thus confront a knowledge problem, the knowledge problem of liberal transitions. In the present paper, I develop this argument further and consider the (mis)adventures of Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) through its lens. The few successes and more numerous failures of DOGE illustrate the knowledge problem of liberal transitions in stark relief. If you would like to meet Scott Scheall, please contact Philippe Gillig. Videoconference link: https://visio.numerique.gouv.fr/zvz-psjg-nor Seminar agenda: https://www.beta-economics.fr/en/2025-2026-cournot-seminars/
