Godwin Agandan nous présentera son article intitulé : “Effect of Crop Insurance on Farmers’ Land Expansion Decisions”.
Abstract: In recent years, the effective management of agro-climatic risks by farmers has become crucial in response to the growing impacts of climate change. Among adaptation strategies, crop insurance quickly emerges as an essential tool. Through the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), the French government encourages its farmers to subscribe to crop insurance by subsidizing insurance premiums. This study focuses on evaluating the effect of crop insurance on farmers’ land expansion decisions in France. The instrumental variables method is applied to correct for endogeneity, using a panel of over 19,000 farms monitored between 2002 and 2022 by the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN). The results show that crop insurance increases the area of farmland by 22.9%. These findings indicate that crop insurance is a crucial tool for ensuring the long-term viability of French farms. However, it is important to examine the crops and farming practices implemented on these newly acquired lands.
