Title: Marginal abatement costs of multiple pollutants in the case of the Dutch dairy sector between 2008 and 2020
Abstract: In this paper, we employ the multiple-equation modeling framework of pollution-generating technologies to derive the marginal abatement costs (MACs) of three pollutants for Dutch dairy farms from 2008 to 2020. Of the three pollutants, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions have the lowest average MAC of about 0.17 euros per kilogram. The MACs are on average 7.6 euros and 71 euros per kilogram for nitrogen and phosphorus surpluses, respectively. An advantage of the framework adopted here is that it also reveals the mitigating strategy with the lowest cost. Reducing the herd size appears to be the cost-efficient option for all three pollutants. In terms of evolution, our results reveal a slight decreasing trend of the MAC for GHG emissions, while this trend increases for nitrogen and phosphorus surpluses.
