“Temperatures, Heterogeneous Exporters and Aggregate Trade”
Abstract: I study exporting firms’ reaction to temperature shocks in destination countries. Using exhaustive customs data from France, from 1995 to 2009, I show that exports at the firm-level are deterred by temperatures in foreign markets. Then, export diversion to other markets is the main shock-coping strategy used by exporters. Third, this strategy generates aggregate export fluctuations as this coping strategy is reserved to large, multi-destination firms, that account for the bulk of exports in the aggregate. Overall, results show that the geography of exports across markets both at the firm and the aggregate levels are affected by temperature shocks.
