The Bureau d’Économie Théorique et Appliquée (BETA) is delighted to welcome Professor Chieko Nakabasami (International Tourism Management, Toyo University) to Strasbourg from April 25 to May 9, 2025.
Graduate of Osaka University (Japan) and Saitama University (Japan), Chieko Nakabasami spent a year researching at the Geography Department of Strasbourg University (formerly Université Louis Pasteur) in 2006. A professor at the School of International Tourism Management at Toyo University in Tokyo, her research focuses on cultural tourism, solidarity tourism and communication in multicultural societies. She is particularly interested in finding solutions for the development of sustainable cultural tourism that is satisfying for both residents and tourists, without destroying the destination’s culture or environment. She also studies innovative ways in which tourism can enrich the societies of tourist destinations.
She is currently working on the issue of tourism between cross-border regions. She believes that this form of tourism, which links countries sharing multiple borders and fosters cultural development, is also a form of sustainable tourism. She is particularly interested in tourism between Alsace, Germany and Switzerland.
Finally, Chieko Nakabasami’s stay in Strasbourg will be the occasion for her to give a lecture: “Pèlerinage aux temples de Chichibu, à l’ère numérique contemporaine” – Tuesday April 29, 2025, 5:30pm, Public lecture, Maison universitaire France-Japon.
