We are pleased to welcome to the next session of the BETA Cournot seminar organised with the support of the FSEG on Friday 22/05, in the EHUD room, at 2.00 pm:
Svitlana Vyetrenko (J. P. Morgan AI Research/Gutenberg Chair)
who will present her paper entitled
Language Models for Numerical Reasoning in Regulated Industries
Abstract: Language models are rapidly transforming workflows in finance and other regulated industries, offering substantial gains in productivity through natural language interfaces and fast processing of unstructured data. However, their adoption in numerical domains remains constrained by fundamental limitations: standard large language models are optimized for next-token text prediction rather than numerical accuracy, and they struggle with hallucinations, latency, privacy, and regulatory requirements such as auditability and explainability. In this talk, we present a framework for adapting language models to numerical reasoning tasks in regulated environments. We discuss several complementary approaches and illustrate our ideas through real-world use cases.
