The forgotten women of 1914–18: a comic book highlights Magali Jaoul-Grammare’s work on women who ‘Died for France’

The University of Strasbourg is showcasing the research of Magali Jaoul-Grammare, a researcher at BETA, in a popular science comic book.
Her work aims to better identify and recognise the female victims of the First World War, in particular by expanding the list of women who have been awarded the designation ‘Died for France’. Using modern statistical methods, she is helping to document these life stories, which have long remained in the shadows, and to enrich historical databases.
To find out more about Magali Jaoul-Grammare’s work, you can also read the article “Les oubliées de 14-18 : redonner une voix aux femmes « Mortes pour la France »” (“The forgotten women of 14–18: giving a voice back to the women ‘Died for France’), published on the INSHS website, CNRS Humanities & Social Sciences, on 10 September 2025.
