Abstract: This thesis analyses skills shortages within the European Union and examines immigration as a potential policy response to alleviate labour market frictions. Chapter 1 presents the theoretical framework and methodology, laying the foundations for the analysis that follows. Chapter 2 studies the determinants of skills-related recruitment difficulties within European companies, whether structural, supply-side or demand-side. Chapter 3 explores the sectoral and national dimensions of skills shortages, highlighting their heterogeneous nature across Member States. Finally, Chapter 4 assesses the responsiveness of immigrants to skills shortages in various economic, institutional and political contexts within European labour markets.
