Job offer: Research Engineer, Carbon Credit Economics (fixed-term contract – 12 months)

BETA and the Climate Economics Chair are recruiting a research engineer for a period of 12 months, as part of the RAMEOUS project, to carry out research into carbon credit economics.

Project background

The RAMEOUS project (Reforestation and Afforestation Markets through Earth Observation Uncertainty Screening), funded under the ARTEMIS 2026 program (INRAE), aims to rigorously evaluate the Low Carbon Label (LBC) in France. Through an interdisciplinary approach combining causal econometrics, remote sensing and the design of carbon credit mechanisms, RAMEOUS aims to help strengthen the credibility of voluntary forest carbon markets, against a backdrop of increasing European regulatory requirements (CRCF, Article 6 of the Paris Agreement).

The successful candidate will be employed on a 12-month contract and will be based at BETA (Nancy) and the Chair in Climate Economics (Paris).

Main responsibilities

  • Database development and management: Enriching and updating the geospatial databases initiated during the FOCUSED project (LBC cadastral data, canopy height maps, SAFRAN meteorological data, biophysical variables).
  • Impact analysis: Implementing quasi-experimental methods for impact assessment (difference-in-differences, synthetic control, propensity score matching) applied to the LBC’s forest plots.
  • Support for the evaluation of remote sensing tools: Contribution to the systematic review of Earth observation tools (LiDAR, satellite imagery, machine learning) available to LBC intermediaries and auditors, and to the construction of the Pareto cost-precision frontier.
  • Scientific coordination and dissemination: Organisation of two interdisciplinary workshops (approximately 50 participants each), drafting of scientific deliverables, regular interactions with the communications teams at BETA and the IGN, and contribution to the drafting of a public policy brief in collaboration with the Florence School of Regulation.

Required profile

Education: Five years of higher education (Master’s degree or engineering school) in economics, statistics, data science, geomatics or a related field.

Required skills:

  • Proficiency in causal econometric methods (DiD, PSM, synthetic control) and/or geospatial analysis;
  • Proficiency in at least one statistical programming language (R, Python, Stata);
  • Writing skills in French and English;
  • A passion for working in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment, as well as autonomy and rigour.

The following would be an advantage: experience in carbon markets or forestry policy; knowledge of remote sensing tools (LiDAR, Sentinel); experience in scientific writing.
