Research visit to beta by François Arès, PhD student in economics at Université Laval (Quebec)
09 July 2025

In June 2025, BETA had the pleasure of welcoming François Arès, a doctoral student in economics at Université Laval (Québec), for a research stay in Nancy.
Before starting his PhD, François Arès worked for several years at the Quebec Ministry of Finance, in the Climate Change Division. His current research focuses on issues associated with infectious disease control and climate change. In particular, he is conducting research on human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination policies, as well as on the evolution of vector-borne diseases such as Lyme disease in a context of global warming.
During his stay, François Arès collaborated with BETA researchers on theoretical projects in environmental economics and epidemiology, with a particular focus on the dynamics of social capital accumulation. He also took part in the 4th annual RENEL chair conference, which provided an opportunity for stimulating exchanges on energy transition and climate change adaptation policies.
This research visit, supported by a Michael Smith Fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, is also part of the strengthening of scientific links between the Université de Lorraine and Université Laval (Quebec), with the ultimate aim of creating an IRP (International Research Partnership) “One Health”, co-directed by David Desmarchelier (BETA) and Maria Fartunova-Michel (IRENEE).
